What To Expect From a Makeup Artist Program in Oklahoma

600 Clock Hours or 30 Credit Hours

Required to earn a cosmetology license

Oklahoma cosmetician programs include 600 clock hours or 30 credit hours in makeup, hair, business, laws, and sanitation. You may also take exam review hours if you want to. The state even specifies how much time must be spent on each topic, for example:

  • Business skills: 90 clock hours
  • Hair design: 200 clock hours
  • Makeup: 200 clock hours
  • Relevant laws: 50 clock hours
  • Sanitation: 60 clock hours
  • Exam review: No more than 500 hours (optional)

If a school uses credit hours instead of clock hours, its accrediting body set the ratio. Any accrediting body should ensure the number meets the state's standards.

Unlike many other states, you need to register as a student and pay a $5 fee before starting classes. The registration includes a contract between you and your chosen school. It also ensures you qualify for a license in terms of your background before spending time and money on school. After registration is approved, you have two years to finish your program at that school.

Students must attend makeup school for between 15 and 40 hours per week. Some time is spent in classrooms; the rest is client work.

The Board sets a basic dress code all cosmetician students must follow. This includes wearing clothing you can easily wash with closed-toed, low-heeled shoes. Students can't wear tank tops, tube tops, or sleeveless shirts.

When you finish school, you have 10 days to submit your exam application and a $35 registration fee. You can turn this in when you're done with 500 clock hours if it's April, May, or June.

Oklahoma Makeup Artist Licensing Requirements

After finishing makeup school, you must pass written and practical tests. Scoring below 75% or waiting too long to take the tests can result in required review hours.

The State Board exams cover the required curriculum topics. The textbook you got in school should have sample questions and answers for the written test.

Oklahoma Makeup Artist License Reciprocity

Cosmeticians aren't eligible for license reciprocity.
