State License Requirements
Education Details

As an electrologist, you may be asked to remove hair from all parts of the body. That's why you need a thorough education in anatomy and physiology. In addition to learning about the various parts of the body, you'll really delve into hair and skin education. You can learn about the layers of the skin, different parts of the hair follicle, and how hair growth affects skin. Studying electrology in Ohio involves lots of theory and hands-on experience. Prior to actually working with electrology equipment, you can learn how to handle and care for the equipment. Then you can work with the equipment to master your electrolysis technique. You may perfect your ability to determine the right intensity, timing, and depth of insertion. These factors are used in many types of electrolysis, including the single needle method, the multiple needle method, and thermolysis. Since you'll be working very closely with clients' skin, the risk of infection is high if you don't follow the proper sanitary standards. A lot of your time may be spent learning about sanitation, hygiene, sterilization of tools, and minimizing infection risk.

In Ohio, you must complete an electrology program that includes at least 750 hours of training. Once you earn your license, you will have to renew it at least every two years. Part of the renewal process is taking 2.5 continuing education units. These courses can help you keep up with sanitation and infection control regulations, as well as the latest techniques. To keep your license up-to-date, you will need to renew it every two years for a fee of $100.

If you plan on offering other skin care services, you may have to complete 750 hours of training and get your license through the Ohio State Board of Cosmetology. The Cosmetic Therapy Association of Ohio offers legislative updates and licensing information to hair removal specialists.

Working as an Electrologist

Electrologists in Ohio often work in salons, spas, or even dedicated hair removal clinics. You may spend your days seeing new clients or helping clients with follow-up visits. A large part of your time may be spent in client consultations. Since electrolysis is a permanent procedure, you have to learn about each client's background and expectations to verify that they are a good fit for this procedure. Sessions may last one to two hours or more, depending on how much hair a client has and how many areas you're treating. Follow-up visits often take less time, so you might see more clients per day. Your schedule may depend on your salon's needs and what clients want. If you work on a freelance basis, you may work intermittently throughout the week. There are quite a few benefits that you can enjoy as an electrologist, not the least of which is the effect you have on your clients' lives! Nicole Policicchio, owner of ElectroYogi, loves that she can use her career to help people. She says that nothing feels as great as knowing that her work allows people to enjoy the freedom enjoyed by permanent hair removal. As a dedicated electrologist, you may improve the lives and confidence of your clients.
