Since electrolysis is a permanent procedure, it's obviously important that you get it right every single time! Your training may start with a thorough examination of electrology equipment and how it is used. You can plan on getting practical experience throughout the duration of your education, as this is often the best way to get comfortable with your new career. In the same vein, safety and sanitation are essential in electrology. Not only do your customers deserve the highest sanitation standards, you must stick to standards laid out by the state of Virginia. On top of sanitation and hygiene, you'll likely learn about how to maintain and store your electrology instruments. Developing your technique is one of the top priorities in an electrology program. For each client, you'll need to adjust your probes, timing, intensity, and depth of insertion for best results. By getting extensive hands-on experience during the training period, you can get a good feel for how these techniques work and how you need to adjust them for different patients.

Virginia does not have a specific licensure for the practice of electrology. Professionals must pass the American Electrology Association certification exam to work in Virginia. The fee for this exam is $325 if you’re a nonmember, and $275 if you have already joined. The AEA also offers professionals an assortment of continuing education opportunities, which are beneficial to your ongoing development. Your certification expires after 5 years. Be sure to apply for re-certification before it expires so you can continue working legally in the state.

Job Outlook Increase
Between 2012 - 2022

While many other beauty professionals have to go through the licensure process before beginning their careers, electrology is one field that does not have any such restrictions. In fact, Virginia is one of the few states that does not have any requirements for those who perform electrolysis! Though it's not required, you may wish to pursue certification through the American Electrology Association. It may help you demonstrate your skills and knowledge to employers. Virginia has a rapidly-growing need for skin care professionals and electrologists. In the decade between 2012 and 2022, O*Net expects job openings for skin care specialists to grow by 48%. This job growth rate far exceeds the national average (O*Net, 2012). The salary you earn as a skin care specialist may be dependent on how much experience you have. O*Net reports that the average salary for a skin care specialist is $20,200 per year. Those at the high end of the pay scale may earn more than $73,800 per year (O*Net, 2013).

Working as an Electrologist

Electrologists are working in more different settings every year! Your skills may be put to good use in a range of versatile places, from dermatology offices and beauty salons to standalone hair removal clinics. If you're interested in owning your own business, electrology may be an excellent specialty for you. Quite a few electrolysis specialists go on to open their own shops and serve clients. In Virginia, Monique T. Burghart is an example of how an electrology career can pave the way to business ownership. With over 10 years of experience in electrolysis, she is now the owner of a major electrolysis studio in Virginia. This career path can offer you more freedom in your schedule. When you look at the philosophy of practice of successful electrologists like Burghart, you'll find that it's very important to care for your clients. If you can think about why your clients want electrolysis and what motivates them to seek out this procedure, you can relate to them better and make them feel comfortable in your office. As with any other customer-based field, being able to provide high-quality customer service can make the difference between a successful business and a struggling one.
