There are many types of electrolysis that you can study. Most schools in Texas cover multiple types of electrolysis, since this allows you to serve a greater range of clients. Commonly covered skills include the single needle method, the multiple needle method, the blend method, the manual method, and the automatic method. As you master each type of electrolysis, you can move onto more difficult techniques. There's a lot of psychology involved in the removal of unwanted hair, and you need to understand your clients' frame of mind before you can fully assist them with their problems. Your electrology in Texas training may delve into how unwanted hair affects patients and how to ensure that they are mentally ready for electrolysis. Gathering a patient's history to make sure that they are a good fit for this procedure is another crucial part of this field. Each type of electrolysis requires on highly specialized techniques. As you work with electrolysis tools, you can perfect your technique under the guidance of instructors. Different variables in electrolysis include intensity, timing, depth of insertion, and probes.

License Renewal Period

Texas is a state that does not regulate the field of electrology. This means you won’t go through an in-state application and renewal process to be a practitioner. But, you will have to pass the American Electrology Association certification exam to prove you have the professional proficiencies to provide quality work for clients. The exam fee is $325 for nonmembers, and $275 for members. Your AEA CPE certification will last for five years; after which time you’ll need to pay for re-certification. The AEA also has continuing education courses that you can also enhance your career.

Job Outlook Increase
Between 2012 - 2022

Texas has a growing need for electrologists, skin care specialists, and hair removal specialists. As more people find out about electrolysis and realize that they don't have to live with unwanted hair for the rest of their lives, electrologists may see a sizable increase in their client base. Between 2010 and 2020, O*Net anticipates a 29% increase in job openings for Texas skin care specialists. This works out to over 150 new jobs per year (O*Net, 2010). Your salary may vary, depending on whether you work for a salon or open your own hair removal business. The majority of skin care specialists in Texas earn between $17,800 and $64,300 per year, with an average salary of $26,500 per year (O*Net, 2013). Although you don't need to get a license to pursue electrology in Texas, you may need to register with your local health department. The Texas Association of Professional Electrologists helps new and experienced electrologists figure out what the laws are in their county.

Working as an Electrologist

Your electrology skills may give you the freedom to work in many different settings. While many salons and spas offer electrolysis to clients, these aren't the only places that you can work. Many dermatology clinics offer electrolysis services and hire electrologists to meet this growing need. If you have a mind for business ownership, you may be able to open your own hair removal salon and increase your earning potential. No matter where you work, you should plan on spending the majority of your time working with patients. From beginning to end, this process can be lengthy. You must first consult with a patient, give them detailed information on electrology, and help them decide if it's a good fit for them. You must then perform the electrolysis procedure, which may take up to an hour or more. Follow-up appointments are common until the hair stops growing back. Ongoing education and networking may also play a big part in your career. The Merrimack Journal notes that local electrologists may attend events hosted by the American Electrology Association and other major organizations. Continuing your education and staying on top of changes in the field of electrology can help you become a leader in your area.
