Job Outlook Increase
Between 2012 - 2022

As salons and spas continue to flourish in New Jersey, management students may be able to look forward to an increase in job openings. Between 2012 and 2022, O*Net expects a 3% increase in job openings for spa managers. Each year, this may lead to over 250 new jobs across the state (O*Net, 2012). O*Net reports that salon management salaries in New Jersey tend to be higher than the national salary range. Their estimates show an average salary of $44,500 per year, almost $10,000 higher than the national average (O*Net, 2013). Those at the top of the salary scale in New Jersey may earn over $68,300 per year (O*Net, 2013). Currently, there are no laws or regulations in place for salon managers, as long as you do not practice cosmetology or any other regulated trade. However, some salons may require you to maintain cosmetology licensure as part of your job. If so, you'll need to keep your license valid through the New Jersey State Board of Cosmetology and Hairstyling.

Working as a Salon Manager

As a salon manager, you'll be the biggest factor in your salon’s success. It's important to be ready to take on that level of responsibility! Since you'll be supervising stylists and other staff members, you'll need to have a strong sense of leadership that permits you to discipline and encourage when necessary. You must also have the ability to multitask. At any given point, you may be helping staff members deal with conflict, solving an unhappy customer's issue, and trying to get payroll done on time. As you gain experience in the field, you can learn how to prioritize and ensure that everything gets done on time. Until you become proficient, though, it's crucial to stay calm under pressure. The job of a salon manager can be very rewarding. If you're considering salon ownership or entrepreneurship, this can be the perfect way to find out if you have the necessary management and business skills. Giselle Beck-Davies used her role as a salon manager to gain experience. She used that work experience to open her own salons and become a cosmetology instructor. Salon managers are incredibly important to staff members, owners, and customers, so you can make a big difference in this career.
