How to Get Your Cosmetology License in Rhode Island

To get your cosmetology license in Rhode Island, you need to complete cosmetology school, pass the NIC cosmetology theory exam, and meet other qualifications. The other qualifications are:

• Being a US citizen or legal resident
• Being of "good moral character"
• Having a high school diploma or the equivalent

The Rhode Island cosmetologist theory exam is available in English, Korean, Vietnamese, and Spanish. It costs $75 to take and another $75 if you need to retake it. To take it in person, you need to go to a testing center in Connecticut or Massachusetts. This computer-based test includes 110 questions, 100 of which are scored, which break down into the following sections:

Rhode Island doesn't have cosmetology license reciprocity agreements with other locations, but you may be able to get your cosmetology license by endorsement. The primary qualification is that your state's requirements are the equivalent of Rhode Island's.

To apply for licensure reciprocity, you must:
