Rhode Island

Everyone deserves to have their beauty and hair care needs met. Until recent years, it wasn’t considered trendy or masculine for men to go to salons and get their hair cut stylishly.

Now, however, men all over Rhode Island are realizing how much well-maintained hair can improve their appearance and their mood.

Education Details

Barbering programs are fairly specialized when compared to many other types of cosmetology programs. Rather than learning a little bit about many different parts of the field, you learn solely about services provided to men. This includes facial hair—you may discover proper shaving techniques, find out how to shave and trim facial hair, and use products to keep it smooth and soft. The rest of your curriculum may focus on the hair care needs of men. This involves learning about different cutting tools and techniques. Your instructors may even cover working with men who have thinning or balding issues.

License Renewal

2 Years*
License Renewal Period

Rhode Island will send you out a renewal notice about 60 days before your barber license is set to expire. This occurs by September 30th every two years, and comes with a $50 renewal fee. If you let your license expire, you will also have to pay a $30 fee for each year that your license has expired. This fee cannot exceed more than $200. Rhode Island does not have any ongoing continuing education requirements from professionals. But, we think it’s always a good idea to look for ways to keep your skills sharp!

Job Outlook Increase
Between 2012 - 2022

Becoming a barber may put you in a great position to earn a competitive salary. You may earn a base salary while bringing in tips and gratuities. Per O*Net, the average salary for a barber is $25,400 per year. Between 2012 and 2022, job openings for barbers may increase by 11%, according to O*Net.

Working as a Barber

Barbers can complete a variety of job duties throughout their days, making this a diverse and exciting job opportunity. If you work for a small privately-owned barber shop, you may just work with one or two people at any given time. If you work for a salon or open your own barber shop, you may take on a variety of different responsibilities. Client care is your biggest responsibility, regardless of how you decide to use your skills. You should see plenty of clients in your chair throughout the day, whether they just need a beard trim or a full cut. Being able to work quickly and efficiently can help you boost your earning potential.
