Most barbering students in Texas spend about nine months in training. You'll likely start out with basic skills like shampooing and conditioning, since most hair care services begin with a thorough wash. In addition, you can take classes that center around the theory of hair and skin. This is crucial—knowing how the skin and hair work can help you give thorough assessments to clients. Get your hands ready, because barbering in Texas requires a lot of practical experience! After learning about hair cutting techniques, you can break out the clippers and razor to practice your skills. After you demonstrate that you can handle the challenge of a mannequin head, you can offer hair cuts to real clients under the supervision of your instructor. More advanced skills covered in barbering school include hair coloring, artificial hair pieces, hair texturing, and masking gray hair. Facial hair is a very important part of a man's appearance, so barbering schools often spend quite a bit of time on it. Shaving techniques allow you to give a man a clean-shaven look, while facial hair design skills can help you give a man the clean look he wants.

In many cases, barbering salaries in this state are considerably higher than the national average! O*Net reports that the average salary for a Texas barber is $28,000, which is $3,000 higher than the national average. They report salaries ranging from $19,200 to $43,400 per year (O*Net, 2013). Your salary may be affected by your experience and seniority, as well as what type of salon you work in. The state of Texas requires barbers to get their license from the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. To become a Class A barber, you need at least 1,500 hours of barbering instruction from an approved facility.

Working as a Barber

Working in the barbering field is very different from working in any other cosmetology specialty. While other cosmetology jobs mostly serve women, barbers only provide services to men. The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation only permits barbers to work in a licensed barber shop or dual-licensed salon, so your work environment may be quite different as well. Since Texas is such a large state with many diverse cultures, you may work with college-age men that want trendy styles, older gentlemen that want the same haircut that they've had for years, and busy men that just want something simple. Being able to communicate with your clients is possibly one of the most important skills you can develop. Your customers may have difficulty expressing what they want or even deciding what kind of style they like; your job is to look at their face shape, examine their style, and help them figure it out. By consistently making customers feel welcome and giving them the haircut they want, you can develop a loyal customer base. Working as a barber may also give you the freedom to participate in local events! Corpus Christi, Texas, hosted Barber Battle. This event puts the skills of over 1,000 barbers to the test. Since barbering requires a unique, in-demand set of skills, it can have great career opportunities for anyone with natural style and good communication. Learn more about becoming a barber today!
