Barber shops are often more than just a place where you can get your hair cut, and Delaware barbers prove it. For years, "Jack the Barber" was the best place to get your local news, long before Facebook— he was your local newsfeed. Or, maybe you're a female barber who wants to add a woman's touch to the barber scene, like this Dover area shop owner who took it over after the original owners retired. No matter what your intentions, you'll first need to compare barber training programs in Delaware to make the right decision.

Fortunately, we make it simple for you to compare barber programs and cosmetology school options in your area. Barber school programs can teach you the fundamentals and latest styles for men's cuts, as well as shaving techniques that will keep your clients coming back. All you have to do is use the search box at the top of this page, or scroll down to view a list of schools that want to speak with students like yourself. So what are you waiting for? State License Requirements

1,500 Education Hours

Required to earn a barbering license

To work as a barber, you must become an expert in men’s hair care and styling. A barber license requires 1,500 hours of training, unless you already have a Washington DC cosmetology license. In that case, you only need 500 additional hours of education. In total, you must pay $230 in fees to earn your license via examination.

Education Details

When you enroll in a DC barbering program, you should have a high level of expectation about learning the art and science of haircutting, grooming and other techniques that fall into this skillset. Being a barber today means more than simple cuts and a basic shave. Men's haircuts sometimes require the same complex approach that women's styles require.

In DC barbering programs, you may take such courses as:

  • Hair relaxing and soft curl
  • Sanitation and safety
  • Shaving
  • Mustache and beard design

License Renewal

2 Years

License renewal period

6 Hours

Continuing education required

Barbering licenses expire on September 30 of odd-numbered years. Washington D.C. requires 6 cosmetology continuing education hours during each renewal period. Two hours must be in sanitation and hygiene, and the other four hours can be in any subject or area of study.
