Colorado License Requirements

Before you can begin your cosmetology career in the state of Colorado, it’s important to ensure that you meet the training and examination requirements of the Office of Barber and Cosmetology Licensure. When you choose a school, you must select a school/program that is approved by the Office of Barber and Cosmetology Licensure. Furthermore, your program must meet the minimum training requirements listed below.
Once your training is complete, you can get your license by taking licensing exams through the Office of Barber and Cosmetology Licensure. Your license will be sent to you after you earn a passing score. The state of Colorado does not allow you to meet your training requirements via an apprenticeship. Colorado allows the licensing exam, offered through PSI, to be taken in English only.
You’re now able to work in the state of Colorado at a registered and licensed beauty salon or shop. Keep in mind, even though Colorado may not require continuing education to renew some licenses, you may wish to consider taking cosmetology continuing education hours in Colorado annually to stay current on the latest trends. 2017 Colorado Board of Cosmetology License Requirements
- COSMETOLOGIST LICENSE: 60 Credit Hours (1800 Clock Hours)
- BARBER LICENSE: 50 Credit Hours (1500 Clock Hours)
- HAIRSTYLIST LICENSE: 40 Credit Hours (1200 Clock Hours)
- COSMETICIAN/ESTHETICIAN LICENSE: 20 Credit Hours (600 Clock Hours)
- NAIL TECHNICIAN LICENSE: 20 Credit Hours (600 Clock Hours)
- PERMANENT MAKEUP CERTIFICATION: 132 Hours + Cosmetology/Esthetics License
Colorado Cosmetology License Renewal
Barber, esthetician, hairstylist and manicurist licenses expire on March 31 of even-numbered years and cost $26 to renew or $41 to reinstate if you have allowed your license to lapse. All cosmetologist licenses expire on April 30 on an annual basis. These licenses cost $32 to renew or $47 to reinstate. Currently, no continuing education hours are required to renew your cosmetology license in Colorado. However, continuing education should be considered part of the field and part of doing business as a cosmetologist.
Cosmetology License Reciprocity (Transfer) in Colorado
If you have a cosmetology license from another state or country, you may be able to apply for Colorado licensure via endorsement. First, you must have the licensing agency of your home state or country send proof of your license in good standing to the Office of Barbering and Cosmetology Licensure. If your license is not currently active, you must meet the educational requirements of the state of Colorado. This also involves passing the licensing examinations for your specialty.
