State License Requirements
Varies Based on Work Experience
Uasually Need Cosmetology License + Work Experience + Student Training

The Idaho Board of Cosmetology oversees the licensure of cosmetology instructors, so you must meet their training requirements before applying for an instructor license. If you are currently licensed as a cosmetologist and you complete a six-month training program, you can apply for licensure. If you have at least two years of experience in cosmetology, you only need three months of instructor training. With five years of beauty industry experience, you can apply for instructor licensure without any training.

Education Details

In a teacher training program, you begin developing the skills you need to train the next generation of beauty instructors. Your curriculum may tackle education theories, the development of lesson plans, and assessment strategies. As you proceed through your program, you may learn how to demonstrate procedures for student understanding. Your instructors may also require you to prove your competence in various areas of cosmetology to ensure that you’re ready to teach students. Throughout your training, you may get practical experience working with current cosmetology students.

License Renewal

License Renewal Period

In Idaho, the renewal process for cosmetology instructors is based on the regular cosmetology license renewal process. You will be required to take care of this by no later than your birthday on an annual basis. To earn your cosmetology license you’ll need two years of experience, plus 1,000 hours of training. Or, if you only have 500 hours of training, you can still earn your license with 2.5 years of experience to balance out your qualifications. The fee for renewal is less than in many states: $20; so it’s not so painful, even though you renew every year.

Job Outlook Increase
Between 2012 - 2022

One great reason to start your cosmetology instructor career in Idaho is the positive job outlook. Between 2012 and 2022, O*Net expects the demand for vocational instructors to increase by 17%. This statewide growth rate is 5% higher than the national average (O*Net, 2012). As a cosmetology teacher, you may earn a competitive salary. Since you’re taking on an instructor role, your income may be steadier, as it does not depend upon tips. O*Net reports that vocational teachers in Idaho earn an average salary of $42,200 per year. If you can teach specialty cosmetology courses, such as courses focusing on electrolysis, makeup application, or permanent makeup, you may have a higher income potential. Furthermore, being willing to substitute teach in certain classes or tutor students after class may allow you to earn more money.

Working as a Cosmetology Instructor

Many cosmetology teachers find their careers to be very rewarding, so you may find that you really look forward to going to work every day. The hours you work every day depend on which school you work for. While some schools are only open during traditional work hours, some schools pride themselves on offering evening and weekend courses. You must be willing to adapt to your school’s schedule. While you may teach adult students most of the time, you may also take part in high school cosmetology programs that prepare high school students for the workforce. An accelerated program provides valuable practical training to students. If you work in this type of program, you may need to adjust your instructional techniques accordingly. While most of your time may be spent in the classroom or the salon floor, you may also need to work with students independently. If students come to you for help or extra training, you should be willing to help them succeed. Though this job may be slightly less physical than other cosmetology jobs, you should still be comfortable being on your feet and working with your hands. As your students progress, you may need to walk around the salon floor to help them with their customers and show them how to improve their work. In addition, you must be able to demonstrate procedures in a clear and effective way.
