Teacher Training
North Dakota

When you meet a cosmetologist or beauty professional who has been well-trained, you can tell right away. Skilled cosmetologists show off their abilities through their cosmetology techniques, their customer service skills, and their interactions with other stylists.

What makes a good stylist? It all begins with the right training. When beauty students enter cosmetology school, they’re already passionate about beauty—they just need strong instructors to turn that passion into a career!

Hours + Cosmetology License + 1 Year Work Experience

Before you can consider becoming a cosmetology instructor, you have to make sure you meet the requirements of the North Dakota State Board of Cosmetology. You must have a valid cosmetology license in the state of North Dakota and at least one year of full-time work experience as a cosmetologist. Once you have met these two requirements, you must complete a training program of at least 160 hours.

Education Details

The training program you complete should prepare you to be a mentor and teacher to new beauty students. You may learn about teaching theory, the ways in which adult students learn, and how to properly offer feedback on work. You may also practice your advanced cosmetology skills, since you must be able to show students proper techniques.

Working as a Cosmetology Instructor

Education is a significant part of the beauty industry, so you may find that you have many options and opportunities once you complete your training. You may choose to work for a beauty school—this is the most popular choice amongst cosmetology instructors in North Dakota. With this career choice, you can work a set schedule, teach a variety of skills, and stick with students from the beginning of their education until they graduate. You may also opt to work for a hair product brand. In this position, you may travel to different cities, teaching stylists and salon owners about new products that they may want to offer to their customers. Some salons and spas also use the services of cosmetology instructors, particularly if they want to teach their stylists about new techniques or skills. Regardless of which career path you decide to follow, a cosmetology instruction degree can be extremely useful. Marae Zimmerman, owner of Salon JiMarae, claims that education is a core aspect of her business. When customers sit down in a stylist’s chair, they learn about the products they can use and how to make their hair beautiful at home. Your teaching skills can be of use in just about any setting!
