State License Requirements
Required to earn a teacher training license
The cosmetology instructor licensing process in Kentucky is straightforward. You must have a cosmetology license for at least one year prior to applying for instructor licensure. You must go through 1,000 hours of training and teaching to be approved to teach courses independently. Then, you can take your written and practical exams. You receive your license once the Board receives proof of your passing scores.
Kentucky cosmetology instructor courses and programs should help you learn effective communication, leadership and ways to design coursework so students can fully grasp the concepts of cosmetology. When choosing programs, be sure to compare the courses each one offers side-by-side. This will help you see clearly which program aligns with your professional aspirations and standards for instructor training.

Like many states, Kentucky does not have an official cosmetology instructor license; so you will need to go through their regular cosmetology licensure process. Once complete, you must hold your license for 1,000 training hours and pass instructor exams. You are not required to take continuing education courses to maintain your license. However, you are expected to renew your license every year during the month of July, by the last day of the month. The renewal fee is $20, and processed by the Kentucky Board of Cosmetology.
