To become licensed as a cosmetology teacher in Iowa, you must first become licensed as a cosmetologist. To be eligible for the licensing exam, you must complete 2100 hours of training. You can then take the licensing exam, consisting of a theoretical (written) and practical (skills) part. In Iowa, you must have practiced for at least one year as a licensed cosmetologist in order to become eligible for the cosmetology instructor license. Plus, you must complete an additional 550 hours of training. Altogether, the additional training should take between three and six months. The Iowa Board of Cosmetology Arts and Sciences administers the licensing exam for both the cosmetology license and the cosmetology instructor license.

Education Details

Most schools of hairstyling, hairdressing, and cosmetology offer programs of instruction in becoming a cosmetology instructor. These programs teach you the art and science of teaching. You will learn different teaching techniques and tools, since students have different learning styles and need to be taught using a method most appropriate to them. You will learn how to plan curricula, how to give a class presentation, encourage student participation, and prepare tests and evaluations. Much of your time will be involved in student teaching.

In Iowa, you can become a cosmetology instructor after you earn your cosmetology license and complete at least 1,000 hours of teacher training. Or, you can also qualify if you can accumulate 2 years’ worth of experience over the previous 6 years. Iowa also makes professionals complete 8 continuing education classes every 2 years. These can be a great way to keep up your professional skills. You will have to renew your license every even-numbered year by December 31st. The fee is $60, and processed by the Iowa Board of Cosmetology Arts and Sciences.

It may also be possible for you to continue practicing your particular skill in a salon or spa while teaching. Scheduling usually allows some flexibility, so this is a good career to work around other responsibilities you may have, such as raising a family.
