State License Requirements

To begin your career in salon management in North Carolina, you may need to earn an Associate's degree or Bachelor's degree in spa management. If you have a current cosmetology license in North Carolina, you may already have the necessary management training.

Education Details

The law is a major part of salon management training, since you'll likely be responsible for staff scheduling and salon maintenance. Your training may cover labor law, worker's compensation, and human resources. As a manager, staff members may first come to you when they are injured, have a issue with other staff members, and are concerned about the schedule. Knowing North Carolina law can help you avoid costly errors. You also need a strong grasp of business finances and budgeting. As a result, your curriculum may include classes like Business Bookkeeping and Small Business Finance. These classes can help you determine staff salaries and raises, order hair care supplies, and get the bills paid. Other classes in your curriculum may be based on customer service. Upon graduation, you should feel comfortable communicating with clients about their service, taking care of clients that are unhappy, and bringing in new clients.

License Renewal

While North Carolina may not require you to earn a specific license for salon management, we highly recommend cosmetology training and licensure. Earning your license will give you the skills to succeed, and the credentials to inspire confidence from your workers and customers. Plus, understanding the business side of things is often included in full programs. If you earn your cosmetology license in North Carolina, you will have to renew it every three years, with a deadline of October 1st and a fee of $23.

Job Outlook Increase
Between 2012 - 2022

In general, spa and salon managers earn salaries that are fairly similar to the national average. Per O*Net, the average salary for a salon manager is $35,000 per year, which is just $300 less than the national average! Most salon managers in this state earn between $22,700 and $56,900 per year (O*Net, 2013). The job outlook for spa managers is stable. Across the country, O*Net expects job openings for spa managers to increase by 11% between 2010 and 2020. Your job outlook may be even more positive if you have prior experience in the field of cosmetology. As a salon employee, you may wish to join the North Carolina State Beauticians & Cosmetologists' Association. Joining this group may help you find ongoing education opportunities for your staff members, keep up with new cosmetology laws that may affect your salon, and keep your finger on the pulse of the cosmetology community.

Working as a Salon Manager

After you complete your training, you may work for many different salons as a manager. Small family-owned salons, chain beauty shops, and upscale beauty shops all rely on managers to keep staff and clients happy. As a result, one of the most important traits you can bring to your new career is a positive attitude. You may be expected to oversee staff with different outlooks and attitudes, and a positive attitude can help you create a more enjoyable work environment! You should also have a strong desire to serve customers. Your job doesn't just involve talking to happy customers and ensuring they come back. You may spend quite a bit of time talking to unhappy customers, solving their problems, and trying to keep their business. Being able to handle stress and respond well under pressure is essential. As a manager, the salon's success is your success. You may spend part of your workday in marketing initiatives and other strategies that can help you expand your client base. The Guardian reports that doing customer research and reaching out to customers via social media can yield great results for salons. The more happy customers you bring in, the more indispensable you can be to your salon!

This attention has continued and I feel very comfortable being able to express myself in ways I didn't think possible.
