Tennessee License Requirements

Last Updated: April 25, 2017

In order to obtain a beauty license in the state of Tennessee, students must complete the requirements listed below from the Tennessee Division of Regulatory Boards. When getting a Tennessee beauty practitioner certification, you must attend school and complete the state’s required training hours in order to be eligible to take the state's cosmetology board test.

The state of Tennessee does not allow apprenticeship to get your training hours. After finishing your training, you are required to pass a licensing exam issued by the Tennessee Division of Regulatory Boards. Tennessee uses PSI to administer the exam and allows you to take the boards in the English language only.

Keep in mind that even though Tennessee may not require continuing education to renew some licenses, you may wish to consider taking cosmetology continuing education hours in Tennessee annually to stay current on the latest trends.
